Overview
The error “Cannot load OCI” occurs when attempting to connect to an Oracle data source from ER/Studio Data Architect. This error indicates that the application is unable to locate or properly load the required Oracle Client (OCI – Oracle Call Interface) libraries. This is typically caused by an issue with the Oracle Client installation or configuration on the client machine. Common causes include:
- Oracle Client is not installed or is improperly installed
- Environment variables (ORACLE_HOME, PATH) are not configured correctly
- Mismatch between 32-bit and 64-bit versions
- Missing or misconfigured tnsnames.ora file
- Required Oracle DLL files are not accessible
Steps To Fix This
- Verify Oracle Client Installation
-Confirm that an Oracle Client is installed on the machine
-If not installed, download and install the appropriate version from Oracle Corporation
-Ensure the installation completes without errors - Validate Environment Variables
-Check that the following environment variables are set correctly: - ORACLE_HOME Should point to the Oracle Client installation directory
- PATH Must include the Oracle Client bin directory.
-Verify the directory where oci.dll is located, is indicated in the system’s PATH. If not, please add the full
path to the bin directory of your Oracle client installation to the system’s PATH environment variable. You may do this through Control Panel > System >
-Advanced System Setting; choose “Advanced” tab page, select “Environment Variables”, find and edit the Path entry
Example:
C:\oracle\product\19.0.0\client_1\bin
-After making changes, restart the machine or application - Confirm 32-bit vs 64-bit Compatibility
- Ensure the Oracle Client version matches ER/Studio
-64-bit ER/Studio → 64-bit Oracle Client A mismatch will prevent OCI libraries from loading - Verify TNSNAMES.ORA Configuration
-Locate the tnsnames.ora file (typically under network\admin)
-Confirm the file contains the correct database connection entries
-Ensure the file is accessible and not corrupted
-Optional: Set the TNS_ADMIN environment variable if the file is stored in a custom location - Check for Required Oracle DLL Files
-Navigate to the Oracle Client bin directory
-Confirm that required OCI DLLs (such as oci.dll) are present. Path example C:\Oracle\product\12.2.0\client_1\BIN\oci.dll
-If missing, reinstall the Oracle Client - Restart and Retest Connection
-Restart ER/Studio Data Architect
-Attempt the Oracle connection again
Additional Information
- ER/Studio relies on the Oracle Client to establish connectivity to Oracle databases
- Without properly configured OCI libraries, connections cannot be established
- Installing multiple Oracle Clients on the same machine can sometimes cause conflicts
- Configure your server in one of the Oracle configuration tools: SQL*Net Easy Config, Net Easy Config or Net Configuration Assistant.
- If you are using Net Easy Config or Net Configuration Assistant, ping the server.
- Check the Windows Path variable. One of the following subdirectories is in it: ORANT\BIN, ORAWIN95\BIN, ORAWIN\BIN, ORA81\BIN.
- Check the Oracle client configuration tool points to the correct TNSNAMES file: TNSNAMES.ora.
- If you are using DBArtisan, you can see a list of servers from your TNSNAMES file in the Server drop-down list in the Datasource Registration Wizard or in the Discover Datasource dialog box.
